I know most dog owners probably know they should walk their dog every day. Especially those that have limited yard space, but how many people actually do it? I know I have been guilty of not doing it and I’m a dog trainer, who is in relatively good physical shape! Never the less, its always good to commit to something that is really good for you and great for your dog.Studies say that doing anything for 21 days in a row forms a habit. This may or may not hold true, however, by committing to 21 days in a row of walking with your dog there really can only be good that comes of it, so why not?
Some people tend to excuse out the walk with their dog because they take the dog to the “dog park”, or they throw the ball for 10 minutes for them. While these are forms of exercise for your dog, there are good reasons to also include the walk, in addition to “the dog park”, or the ball throwing session. In fact the benefits of walking your dog don’t compare at all to just throwing the ball a few times for a quick game of fetch.
The walk increases physical and mental focus and challenge for your dog. It increases the bond between you and your dog and it allows your dog to see you as the leader. Practice like this changes everything with your dog. Should you choose to take the 21 Day Walk Your Dog Every Day Challenge I can tell you that you will see amazing changes in your dogs behavior as well as your attitude towards life.
Here are some things you can work on while walking your dog.
*Practice heeling
*Practice walking on a loose leash without pulling but without a tight heel
*Do different routes so your dog doesn’t get over excited by simply seeing something new.
And by the way, I don’t mean stop the ball games or the “the dog park” if that is part of your routine. The 21 Day Walk Your Dog Every Day Challenge means in addition to those games!
